    «Main Errors and Inaccuracies in the Articles on Demographic Topics in the Media»

    The topic of demography in recent years excites a lot of discussion among politicians, economists and sociologists. These discussions are reflected in the media including on the Internet: the articles addresses issues of fertility and maternity capital, mortality and health, migration and the labor market. However in these articles it is possible to detect certain errors and inaccuracies which are associated with the use of demographic indicators and their interpretation. This article conducted a content analysis of the Russian Internet editions (mass media), contains the basic errors in these publications in terms of major demographic processes and categories, and the classification of those errors. We have found five types of errors and inaccuracies: the discrepancy of reality, stylistic inaccuracies, inaccuracies in the wording, errors and inaccuracies of interpretation of demographic processes, inaccuracies of use of indicators and terms. Although crude rates are mostly used in the media due to their plainness, for comparison between regions and for a time it is essential to use special demographic indicators such as age-standardized mortality rate, life expectancy, total fertility rate and other. The article would be useful not only to journalists and to the main newsmakers in the person of officials, but also to students who write essays and abstracts on the subject of demography, and to all of them who feel a lack of demographic knowledge.

    «“Dostoevsky is Also Largely Russian Apocalypse” (F.M.Dostoevsky in Creative Consciousness of M.A. Voloshin and M.A. Bulgakov)»

    Аn appeal to the characters and motives of Russian writers’ works, especially Dostoevsky’s, seems to be one of the sources of unconscious creative proximity between these two writers of the XX century. Voloshin considered Bulgakov as «the first who captured the soul of Russian strife». However, he did it by himself with no less artistic force in his poem «Russia», verses of the first years of revolution and civil war. A modern reader can see many echoes between the works of Dostoevsky, Voloshin and Bulgakov.

  • «Financial and Economic Aspects of the Trud Newspaper Functioning in First “NEP” (New Economic Policy) Years»

    This article contains the financial and economic analysis of activity of Soviet newspaper «Trud» in 1922—1923. Based on archival documents the author describes peculiarities of newspaper funding, income and expenditure pattern, as well as the cost value of publication as of the indicated period.

    «The Coverage of Migration in the Dutch Press (Exemplified by the Telegraaf Publications from 2014–2015)»

    The paper presents the results of the qualitative and quantitative content analysis of publications in De Telegraaf, the biggest daily Dutch newspaper, related to the topic of migration in 2014—2015. The total number of publications under analysis was 133; the study was carried out using the online version of the newspaper and the search by key words. The aim of the study was to reveal any possible differences in covering the topic of the migration in 2015, the year when the number of refugees to the European countries, including the Netherlands, reached the highest level ever, and in 2014, when that number was noticeably lower. The analysis of publications using several main criteria (the total number of publications related to the migration, form and genre of publications, attitude to the topic under analysis transmitted through publications, thematic areas) showed that despite the significant growth in the number of publications devoted to the migration (15 in 2014 and 118 in 2015), the way De Telegraaf covered that topic remained the same. The paper strives to provide its readers an unbiased coverage of the events as soon as possible, usually choosing a short report followed by a photo or an illustration for that purpose, and demonstrates certain interest in the fields of politics, social life and personal stories of migrants.

  • «The Сontent Model of the Local Newspaper in a Competitive Environment (The Case of Chicago Dailies)»

    The author analyses the content of Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times newspapers, which are competing with each other. There were considered 890 articles during the period from August, 17, 2015 to August, 21, 2015. The author studies how competition influences the “first” and the “second” newspaper content models. The research helps to understand how both dailies can survive in one market, considering that in most American cities the “second” newspapers couldn't cope with competition and died.

    The article presents the results of a content analysis of three television news magazines («The Fifth Estate» (Canada), «60 minutes» (USA), «60 minutes» (Australia)). The author examines how national features of the country influence the themes and content of the transmission, analyzes how the content depends on the broadcasting model. The research helps to understand particular features of the format’s development in the three Anglo-Saxon countries.

    «Changes of Editor Profession at the Central Russian Dailies»

    The article presents the results of study of editors-in chief at Russian dailies. In particular the social, demographic characteristics and careers have been investigated. The author concludes that the group of editors-in chief has been significantly transformed in the last years. The professionalization of editor’s-in-chief work at dailies on the basis of journalistic competencies is evident. The “universalization” of professional competencies is not the trend for now.

    «Online News Consumption by Students of Lomonosov Moscow State University»

    The article examines features attributed to consumption of news on the Internet by young and active residents of Moscow — students of the faculty of journalism at the Lomonosov MSU. Authors analyze users’ behavior on the web, specifically their interest in various news resources and links to news publications posted on social websites. The study reveals a number of particular patterns of news consumption peculiar to future journalists and marks the most significant news distributors.

  • «Business Strategy Based on User-Generated Content: Russian Mass Media Experience»

    During the crisis the reduction of costs on media content is extremely important. Some experts believe that the media business strategy based on the use of UGC resources can help to reduce the cost of media product. The author has tried to analyze the effectiveness of this strategy. In the 2014-2015 we conducted in-depth interviews with the site editors and top managers of Russian media companies. We have concluded that this strategy has attracted a lot of criticism.
