«Development and validation of a short doomscrolling scale»

This article presents the development and validation of a short doomscrolling scale, conceptualized as excessive consumption of negative news that affects individuals’ emotional state. A five-item scale is proposed, partly based on the components model of behavioral addictions and the diagnostic criteria for addictions (DSM-5). The quality of the instrument is tested using data from a nationally representative Russian survey conducted in spring 2025 (N = 6041). The distribution of responses demonstrates a “stepwise” pattern. There is relatively high agreement with statements about constant consumption of negative content (22%) and maintaining the same level of consumption despite an awareness of its harmful effects (26%). Lower support is observed for items capturing withdrawal-like symptoms (9%) and news-related functional impairments (10%). Accordingly, the scale is appropriate for assessing the severity of doomscrolling. The instrument demonstrates acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.741), which is stable across different socio-demographic groups. All items make a meaningful contribution to the measurement of doomscrolling; removing any individual statement reduces the internal consistency of the scale. The instrument has a unidimensional structure: all items show sufficient communalities and high factor loadings. Three levels of doomscrolling are distinguished (absent, moderate, and pronounced), with higher levels associated with an increased share of respondents reporting nervous disorders, use of tranquilizers and antidepressants, as well as heightened anxiety about the future. The study concludes that the scale is suitable for diagnosing doomscrolling and identifying risk groups.

«Analysis of relations between the countries of the Organization of Turkic states and Israel from a media big data perspective»

This study aims to examine the relations of the member and observer countries of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) with Israel, based on Big Data and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). To this end, the study aims to analyze the bilateral diplomatic relations of the OTS countries with Israel and their capacity for collective action. In this context, the study analyzed the GDELT (Global Database of Events, Location, and Tone) Big Data database, which monitors global media and event data in real time. Changes in the foreign policy rhetoric and attitudes of the OTS countries towards Israel were examined in two separate periods: before and after the Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October 2023. This process analysis is based on an examination of the nature of events and media tone in the OTS countries’ relations with Israel. A diplomatic interaction map was created to reveal the diplomatic tendencies and collective behavior potential of the OTS countries during the specified periods. This was done using the Goldstein scale, which measures the impact of events in news reports, and the Average Tone variable, which measures the average emotional tone of news reports. A total of 81.620 events were processed using a Python-based Flask application to determine the metrics of ‘alignment,’ ‘overlap,’ and ‘collective convergence potential.’ The analysis revealed that the OTS countries developed a relatively harmonious, constructive, and balanced discourse towards Israel in the pre-crisis period. However, after the crisis, they tended to take a cautious distance and adopt a more balanced stance in their discourse and attitudes.

«Semantics and pragmatics of the collocation “traditional values” in media discourse»

The historical processes that we are witnessing determine the relevance of this study. The authors focus on the current key words. These are lexical units that appear in media discourse in connection with specific significant events on the socio-political agenda. Such words have a special communicative status. In terms of meaning, the current key words are comparable to a whole sentence. The communicative status of such lexical units determines their central position in the semantic network of discourse. In the current media space, one of the most popular keywords is “traditional values”. The breadth of its widespread use is set by the president’s authority: public speeches and the corresponding Decree. However, the semanticization of this keyword is not complete. It is common for this collocation to be used without understanding its internal content. This use of the phrase “traditional values” is a tribute to the etiquette that has developed in professional speech. This study provides a semantic and stylistic (in terms of speech influence) analysis of the use of current keyword “traditional values” and proves the historical conditioning of its ambiguous use in media discourse. The following mechanisms of realization of suggestive (and partly manipulative) potential have been revealed: propositionality; inclusion in the system of fixed concepts; hidden commands; construction of the opposition “friend-foe”; reliance on the Russian rhetorical ideal.

«The Work of the Regional Tass “Press-Cliché” Network of Photo Correspondents in the Russian Soviet Republic (1926–1931)»

The year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Bureau of Literary and Illustration Services for the Press “Press-cliché” TASS, the organization that launched the oldest photo agency operating in Russia today, Photo ITAR-TASS (also – TASS Photo Agency). Since its early years Press-cliché established a network of photo correspondents from across the young Russian Republic, enabling domestic and international periodicals to obtain locally relevant photo information promptly. The article reconstructs and analyzes the regime of cooperation with regional photographers: the terms of collaboration, the process of developing the thematic plan and providing instruction on technical and artistic issues, as well as the conditions of supplying photographic equipment and materials. The activities of Press-cliché’s photo correspondent network were investigated based on a corpus of documents from the collections of the State Archives of the Russian Federation (F. R-391, F. R-4459).

  • «The genre of press review in Boris Vian’s music journalism: structural and compositional features and its role in communication with readers»

French writer Boris Vian spent nearly eleven years, from 1947 to 1958, reviewing press for the Parisian music magazine Jazz Hot. The reviews incorporated an editorial column of responses to readers, after which the magazine’s communication with its audience gradually became intense and rich. The first analysis of the complete archive of author press reviews revealed that Vian, through literary and journalistic play, transformed the press review into a special form of interaction with readers, where every structural element worked to create the effect of presence and spontaneous conversation with readers in real time. This conversation was led by a character created by Vian, a “revuedepressiste”, who made the column recognizable by appearing from issue to issue of the magazine and telling not only about the latest jazz press but also about his life, mood, the hardships of his profession, and his musical tastes. By creating the illusion of closeness to the reviewer and the effect of a lively conversation, Vian encouraged readers to send letters and enter into a real dialogue. Vian’s journalistic texts are published in Russian for the first time.

«From Manuscript to the Hyperlink: The Print and Digital Revolutions in Comparative Perspective»

The article explores the phenomenon of media revolutions through a comparative analysis of the print revolution of the fifteenth century and the digital revolution of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The study aims to identify how these transformative shifts in media culture altered the production, circulation, and reception of knowledge, and how they reconfigured institutions of legitimacy and infrastructures of communication. The research applies an interdisciplinary methodology that combines book history, media theory, social and intellectual history, and introduces a comparative matrix designed to trace both structural similarities and cultural differences between the two epochs. Special attention is given to the conceptual evolution of the term “media revolutions,” from early notions of “communication” or “information revolutions” to later discussions of “Gutenberg’s revolution”, mediological approaches, and current typologies. The findings demonstrate recurring mechanisms of cultural adaptation to technological change, including transformations of authorship, reading and navigation practices, and public visibility. The conclusion emphasizes the need for an analytical framework that resists both technological determinism and cultural relativism, offering instead a historically grounded perspective on the dynamics of media change. The research further reveals that the outcomes of media revolutions do not follow a uniform Western script. Examining non-Western contexts uncovers multiple trajectories shaped by distinct institutions of legitimation and systems controlling access.
