«The Demand for Journalistic Text Genres in Online Media »

The genre varieties of online and print media differ significantly. This applies to both the list of genres and the frequency of their use. In a case study of the most popular Russian media websites, the article shows which genres are in demand in modern online publications. The predominant genre is news items, which outnumber the texts of other genres counted together. Reports and interviews are rarely used, feature stories and investigations have almost disappeared. The popular genres are collections, incidents/life stories and recommendations. Almost all the materials with a text component are monomedia ones. Multimedia longreads are very rare in spite of the technical possibilities to produce them.

«Special Features of the Conceptual Model of Russian Visual Arts Magazines»

The article presents the results of a content analysis of contemporary Russian visual arts magazines — Garage Russia, Iskusstvo and Russkoe Iskusstvo, which were chosen taking into consideration the typological analysis of similar magazines previously made by the author. Ten issues of the magazines during the period from January till December 2016 were considered. Modern Russian art field is at the stage of formation, and visual arts media promote the development of the industry, the effective functioning of its institutions, the raising of art literacy standards among a wide audience and the popularization of visual arts. The topicality of this article is determined by the need to correct the existing models and develop new up-to-date ones. The author of the article draws conclusions about the concepts of the analyzed magazines based on the thematic, genre and author criteria. The obtained characteristics prove to be special and dissimilar for each of the analyzed magazines. Besides that, the author compares the results of the content analysis with the self-identity of the magazines to check if they follow their own self-proclaimed concept. In the final analysis, it may be said that a contemporary Russian visual arts magazine is a periodical about fine arts that uses a wide range of genres, collaborates with professionals in the art field and is meant for a vast audience that is non-professional in arts and the cultural sector as a whole.

«The Pravo Newspaper and Censorship in the Late 19th – Early 20th Century»

The article considers the history of the legal newspaper Pravo and its censorship history. The newspaper was an influential Russian liberal periodical of the early 20th century. It was published without pre-censorship but underwent pressure from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, received administrative warnings for its “harmful direction” and was on the verge of administrative closure. Pravo published articles about the state of Russian legislation, government administration and the court system, giving special attention to press legislation. It criticized the censorship system in Russia for administrative arbitrariness and advocated freedom of the press based on the rule of law. The history of censorship against the newspaper itself is indicative of the arbitrary character of Russian law on freedom of the press.

  • «Towards the Perception of A.S. Pushkin’s Non-Fictional Prose by Contemporary American Researchers »

For this article, the author conducted and analyzed five interviews with famous American scholars. The purpose of the research was to identify the most promising trends and find out how the image of the Poet had been changing over the past 50 years. The author assumes that Pushkin’s non-fictional prose can reveal new aspects of his universalism and his ability to work in different genres. The answers given by the interviewed scholars explain the reasons why they started to explore the field, what they think about it now and how the audience responded to their work. This part of the Poet’s oeuvre is not yet well studied but one can see a sustained interest in the theme. The author also briefly examines the main periods in the study and translation of Pushkin’s non-fictional prose in the USA and outlines the major trends that can help to form a more adequate perception of Pushkin (by both academic and ordinary readers) in further scholarly and translation practice.

  • «The Conflict between the Religious and Secular Outlook in Graham Greene’s Novels “The Power and the Glory” and “Monsignor Quixote”»

The article examines the conflict between the religious and secular outlook in Graham Greene’s novels “The Power and the Glory” (1940) and “Monsignor Quixote” (1982) as well as the features of his writing vision and the ways of expressing the author’s position. It is argued that the latter is expressed indirectly through the plot, composition and artistic details. The novels involve a complex combination of the objectification of what is described by eliminating the author’s open intervention and its subjectification manifested in an aspiration to depict the characters’ individual perception of the world.
