Section: Modern Journalism: Subjects and Issues

Social journalism, which a decade ago was insufficiently legitimate as a theoretical category and discriminated against as a content strategy in practice, today occupies a strong place in public discourse. Among the topics, which are popular and in demand by the audience, existentially important problems are highlighted, reflecting the experience of everyday life in a situation of aggravation of global challenges. The motives for expanding the boundaries of the humanitarian information agenda are different, as are its thematic areas as a product of social journalism. The density of the involvement of everyday realities in the content of the media strongly dictates the adoption of specific decisions that directly affect the development of public potential. This circumstance requires a deeper understanding of the theoretical origins of social journalism and conceptually sound assessments of its post-Soviet path. The article presents the results of the development of social journalism over a twenty-year period, names new phenomena and processes of the last decade, identifies the points of intersection of the main thematic agendas against the background of cardinal changes in the conditions for the development of journalism and the “reassembly” of the domestic media system.

Keywords: social journalism, humanitarian media agenda, media content, sequestration, diffusion, generalization
