Section: History of Journalism

The article deals with the Crimean Tatar women’s magazine “Sovet Qadinligi” (“Soviet Woman”), published in the Crimean ASSR from 1932 to 1941 (in 1932–1936 – under the title “Qadynliq Sotsializm Yolinda” (“Woman On The Way To Socialism”)). The relevance of the appeal to this research publication is due not only to its practical inconsistency, but also to the fact that it was the example of an ethnic women’s magazine published from 1930s to early 1940s. It was the source of information about the Crimean life of certain period and the social transformations that took place in its female environment. The purpose of this article is to reveal the historical, typological and problem oriented thematic aspects of the journal “Sovet Qadynligi”. Based on the completed research and taking into account the type-forming features, the scholars gave the historical and typological characteristics to the edition. The authors also came to the conclusion that the “Sovet Qadinligi” was a mass women’s publication that performed agitation and propaganda functions. The content of the magazine was significantly politicized, and the vocabulary was filled with a large number of Russian neologisms. A large number of materials on the topic of the Soviet government’s concerned for women, the status of women abroad, the publication of works of fiction devoted to the “women’s theme” corresponded to the gender needs of the audience. One could notice the displacement of mother-woman image by the image of a working woman in the early 1930s, and the absence of typical headings for women’s magazines. However, by the end of the 1930s, as the state policy in the field of motherhood and childhood changed, the model of the magazine was partially adjusted. It included a “Children’s page”, the headings “Useful tips”, “To help housewives”, “Tips for young mothers”, as well as materials on the topic of appearance care.
