The purpose of this article is to describe the circumstances of I.A. Bunin's departure abroad at the beginning of 1920. So far no research on this subject has been carried out in Russian and foreign Bunin studies. Besides, the author used the previously unknown documents stored in the Russian State Military Archive (Moscow). These two facts allow to speak about the scientific novelty of the work.

Keywords: I.A. Bunin, Odessa, the Balkan States, evacuation, emigration.
