The article deals with the obituaries for Gogol, published in 1852 in the Serbian press. After the death of the writer, Srpske Novine (Serbian Newspaper) promptly reported in a short message about his death, and three months later a detailed obituary for the writer was published in several issues, from which Serbian readers learned a lot about both the life and work of Gogol. This obituary not only fixed a certain image of the great Slavic writer in the memory of contemporaries, but also raised the question of the world recognition of Gogol and, more broadly, of Russian classical literature. It was in this way that the process of perpetuating, building up symbolic capital (P. Bourdieu) and the subsequent cultural canonization of Gogol was launched. In this sense, Gogol’s obituary in Serbia can be considered the starting point for the entry of the Russian writer into the national literary canon.
