The article presents the results of studying the practice of self-regulation in Russian and Chinese mass media in 1991–2023. The author carried out an analysis of the evolution of regulation in Russia and China in the period under study and described the features of these processes in both countries. Based on the analysis of the codes of professional ethics, similar features and differences in the values and main provisions of the Media Ethical Standard 2.0 (Russia, 2021) and the Code of Professional Ethics (China, 2019) were identified. A case study of the activities of the Russian and Chinese organisations revealed a difference in the mechanisms for implementing self-regulation, which is accounted for by the national specifics of the development of these institutions in Russia and China.
